ALPENA -- On Monday, April 17 the Alpha Xi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a society of Women Educators, met at the First United Methodist Church for their meeting and annual auction. Members and guests enjoyed a catered meal before the start of the meeting.

A memorial service was held to honor a longtime member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Mary Louise Hart. She was a music teacher in the Alpena Public Schools, the organist at First United Methodist Church, and very involved in musical programs in our community for many years.

Members and guests had the opportunity to bid on silent auction items. The money raised, a total of $1,625, will be used to fund DKG programs including the gift of a book to each newborn at the Alpena hospital, annual $100 grants to each of five new teachers in our area, a $1,000 scholarship awarded annually to a college student entering the field of education and supporting educators throughout the year.

The group's next meeting will be held on May 18 at the 19th Hole Restaurant.
