Alpena County Library Seed Library open for business
ALPENA -- The Alpena County George N. Fletcher Public Library Seed Library is open for business for the 2023 growing season. Offering a wide variety of fruit, vegetable, and herb seeds, the seed library is part of a growing trend in Michigan libraries.
Offerings include the Michigan Seed Library Network's One Seed, One State selection, and Grand Rapids lettuce, a frilly, non-bitter leaf lettuce that is easy to grow and may be eaten as baby lettuce as early as 28 days after planting.
Anyone with a library card can "check out" packets of seeds for their garden with the pledge to harvest and save a portion of the seeds to bring back to the library for the 2024 season. Seed saving is a valuable way to preserve food history and cultural practices while also supporting local food systems and preserving genetic diversity.

The library is located at 211 N. 1st Ave. in downtown Alpena. The Alpena County George N. Fletcher Public Library was established in 1967 as a county library. Bridge results announced
ALPENA -- Duplicate Bridge Club winners for this week have been announced.
Linda Clegg and Audrey Stevens finished first, followed by Jan Kane and Ron Young in second, and Jackie Kennedy and Loretta Reynolds in third.
