Adverse Childhood Experiences course offered for adults
ALPENA -- Partners In Prevention is offering an educational five-week course for adults curious about the impact of their own Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and other traumatic events during childhood on their adult lives. This course is free to residents of Alpena, Alcona, Montmorency, and Presque Isle counties. The cost is a $50 materials fee for all others.
The Effects of Trauma -- How Trauma in Developmental Years Can Impact Adulthood will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Mondays, April 10, 17, 24, May 1 and 8 at Shoreline Wesleyan Church, 135 River St. in Alpena. Funding for this course is provided by Northeast Michigan Community Mental Health.
This is not a therapy group.

1. Recognize the impact trauma has had on you.
2. Feel empowered to take positive steps toward healing.
3. Understand and manage overwhelming emotions.
4. Understand and modify problematic patterns of behavior.
5. Develop a strength-based understanding of your life story.
6. Learn how to seek trauma-focused assessment and treatment, if needed.
7. Learn ways to take care of yourself.

SafeTALK Workshop Tuesday in RC
ROGERS CITY -- Join Partners in Prevention for a safeTALK workshop -- Make a connection. Help save a life. Suicide is preventable. Anyone can make a difference.
At this workshop you will learn:
¯ Training in suicide alertness skills
¯ Four basic steps to create a life-saving connection
¯ Skills that are widely used by professionals and the general public
Who should take safeTALK?
This safeTALK workshop is designed for anyone age 15 or older. It will be held from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 11 in the Jordon Conference Room, Presque Isle District Library, 181 E. Erie, Rogers City. This free workshop is funded by a Mental Health Awareness and Training Grant.

Long Lake meeting Wed.
The Long Lake Improvement Association will meet at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 12 at Parker House Restaurant, 24732 U.S.-23 North.

Garden Club met
ALPENA -- The Alpena Garden Club met on April 3 at the NOAA facility.
President BJ Sander opened the meeting. Minutes were read and approved. A thank-you note was sent to the family of a past member who sent a generous donation to the club.
A memorial sign was purchased to honor past members. It will be placed at the butterfly garden with names to be added as needed.
The 10-minute talk was given by Elizabeth Littler. She spoke on the local water garden, giving a very interesting presentation.
The annual ACC gardeners sale will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 25, and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 27, with flowers, veggies, perennials, and houseplants at great prices. Plan to attend.
The meeting ended with Netta from Netta's Greenhouse in Posen. She explained the facets of her business, brought flowers to show, answered questions, and her presentation was very interesting and informative.
Future meetings will now be at Alpena Community College Room 106. The next meeting will be at 1 p.m. on May 1. New members are always welcome.
Free healthy lifestyle program for kids
Community health educators at MyMichigan Health are teaching a fun and interactive program that will teach students skills needed to make healthy lifestyle choices. The free, virtual program is designed for students ages 8 to 12.
Choose between a three-week course that meets twice a week, or a six-week course that meets once a week. The three-week course meets from 5 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays from April 18 through May 4. The six-week course meets from 6 to 7 p.m. on Sundays from April 16 to May 21.
The program is called GoThrive! It will focus on nutrition and using MyPlate for portion sizes, understanding food and drink labels, learning about hidden sugars, why water is important, vitamin facts, exercise, stress and the importance of sleep. Kids will learn how to practice healthy behaviors including increasing fruit and vegetable and water consumption, increasing physical activity and decreasing screen time.
