ALPENA -- The annual observance of the National Day of Prayer will be held from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 4, hosted locally by the Alpena Area Ministerial Association at Alpena City Hall, 208 N. 1st. Ave.
The community is warmly invited to attend in this public time of prayer for our nation. In the case of inclement weather, the event will be held inside the city hall building.
The National Day of Prayer, as designated by our government, belongs to all Americans--it is not owned by any one group, and every American can observe this time of prayer. The National Day of Prayer tradition predates the founding of the United States of America, evidenced by the Continental Congress' proclamation in 1775 setting aside a day of prayer. In 1952, Congress established an annual day of prayer and, in 1988, that law was amended, designating the National Day of Prayer as the first Thursday in May.
The 2023 theme, "Pray Fervently in Righteousness and Avail Much," is based on James 5:16b, and serves as a reminder of the promise that, "The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much." Fervent prayer times will be carried out in all 50 states and several U.S. territories through tens of thousands of local prayer gatherings on the National Day of Prayer.
This year's annual National Day of Prayer Broadcast will be co-hosted by the Rev. Samuel Rodriguez and NDP Task Force president Kathy Branzel. It will air on television and radio, and will be streamed through social media at 8 p.m. ET on a variety of networks and digital platforms in the U.S., and around the world, reaching an audience of nearly 110 million households.
