ALPENA -- "Little Women," the classic story of young women finding their voice in Civil War-era New England, is cast and currently in rehearsal at Alpena Civic Theatre.
Patrons of Alpena Civic Theatre will be excited to learn that director Carol Rundell and Assistant Director Jackie Herbert have cast several energetic and talented young actors to appear onstage in "Little Women," slated to run Thursday through Sunday, May 11 to 21.
The play, based on the novel by Louisa May Alcott, depicts the joys and struggles of the closeknit March family of four young women attempting to cope with the hardships of the Civil War while shaping their own lives as they come of age in 19th century New England.
Meg, the eldest of the four sisters, played by Tala Barton, is gentle and kind in her guidance of her three younger sisters, while admitting to a desire for a life of leisure and luxury.
The second-oldest, Jo, played by Mariah Brancheau, is outspoken and impatient with the limitations placed on women. She longs to be a writer to demonstrate her capabilities.
Beth, the third daughter, played by Vie Luther, is quiet and virtuous, always trying to do the best for others. She loves music and plays the piano well.
Amy, played by Briana Jasso, is a visual artist who adores beauty and has a weakness for pretty things that she would like to posess. She has a temper, but works to impove herself.
Their mother, Marmee, played by Kendra McInerney, is the moral role model and emotional anchor for her daughters. She works hard but happily while her husband is away in the war, and she counsels the girls through all of their problems.
Additional characters rounding out the cast include Laurie (Lawrence), played by Eric Collins; Mr. March, father of the "little women," played by Lucas Moquin; Aunt March, played by Marlo Broad; Mr. Brooke, played by Iven Brown: and Professor Bhaer, played by Morgan Suszek.
The show will not run on May 13, since the Alpena High School prom will take place on that evening. Instead, Alpena Civic Theatre will run two shows on Saturday, May 20, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
