ALPENA -- The Alpena Lions Club welcomed Meagan Wright of the Hoophouse at their meeting on April 11.
The Hoophouse is a group of volunteers who plan, prep, plant, and harvest organic produce for use in our community. The Hoophouse started as a project of the Friends of the Farmers Market in the summer of 2013. The main goal of the Hoophouse is to provide quality produce to the Senior Citizens Center and the Friendship Room; to assist in feeding those in need.
In their garden they grow many varieties of lettuce, carrots, onions, kale, radishes, eggplant, squash, corn, peppers, celery and an assortment of other vegetables. On the herb side they provide fresh oregano, thyme, parsley, garlic and sage to accent the meals provided to the community. They utilize an area that is approximately 40 feet by 60 feet, and harvest produce from May to October.
The Hoophouse is fully supported by donations from local organizations, private individuals and volunteers. All monetary donations are used to purchase seeds, fertilizers and equipment needed to grow these crops. The Alpena Lions Club donates yearly to the Hoophouse to assist them in serving the Alpena community.
