ALL programs set for this week

ALPENA ­-- The Association of Lifelong Learners at Alpena Community College has special programs planned for this week, in addition to its regular weekly programs.

Today at 10 a.m. at M. Briggs Center (in-person only) is Stop the Bleed! What stops bleeding? In a Stop the Bleed course, you'll learn three quick techniques to help save a life before someone bleeds out: (1) How to use your hands to apply pressure to a wound; (2) How to pack a wound to control bleeding: (3) How to correctly apply a tourniquet. These three techniques will empower you to assist in an emergency and potentially save a life. In addition, there will be an explanation of the Alpena Community AED program. Andy Marceau is the Community Risk Reduction Officer for the City of Alpena.

On Tuesday at 2 p.m., learn about Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine. Jacob Straley and Tammy Ruemenapp, M.Ed., will explain the importance of wound care and some of the advanced modalities such as hyperbaric. Jacob Straley is a nurse practioner. He specializes in wound treatment and hyperbaric medicine and see patients at the Wound Treatment Center at MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena. Tammy Ruemenapp, M.Ed., is the program director at the Wound Treatment Center at MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena. She specializes in leadership and has worked for the Wound Care Center since August 2022.

On Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., join Mary Ann Krajnik Crawford for Journal Writing and Sharing Stories at M. Briggs Center (in-person only). This session invites us to write--for ourselves or for others. Journal writing is a first step for creating stories, capturing memories, and exploring our ideas and feelings. This is writing for fun and insight in a no-pressure atmosphere. You can write in response to prompts or about whatever you choose, and you can do as much or as little writing and sharing as our time allows. The purpose is to have an hour devoted to exploring our creative spirits through writing. Bring paper or a journal, pens or pencils or a computer--whatever you need to be comfortable for writing.Mary Ann Krajnik Crawford has been a personal journal writer and teacher of writing for many years. She retired from Central Michigan University as emeritus professor of English and director of the Writing Center and continues to write for the fun of it.

On Friday at 10 a.m. at M. Briggs Center (in-person only) join ALL for Let's Keep You Walking. This presentation will cover what a podiatrist does and when you should seek care. It will also cover common medical conditions podiatrists treat: such as nerve pain, diabetic foot care, ulcerations, fractures, arthritis, bunions, plantar fasciitis and ankle sprains. Dr. Patterson will also go over shoe gear and how to get a good fit and when orthotics are needed.Jessica Patterson, DPM, is a board-certified podiatrist working at Northern Foot and Ankle, with offices in Alpena and Oscoda. She graduated from Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine in Ohio and completed her residency at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana.
