ALPENA -- Through the generosity of the Granum Grants, a community film series entitled "Thursday Night Heavy Hitters" will be presented starting this week.
The film series is free of charge and open to the public. The films run six consecutive Thursday nights at 6 p.m. beginning March 30.
Each highly acclaimed, artistically composed film focuses on social issues that affect our community. After each screening, a local expert on the issues portrayed through the film will give a brief presentation about how those issues are prevalent in the Alpena area. Organizers will then invite the public to join them in a lively and relevant discussion about the specific issues raised and what we can do as a community to combat them.
These issues include the failure of the mental health system, racism, addiction, domestic violence, growing up LGBTQ+ in conservative cultures, and industrial pollution of small towns.
This is an excellent opportunity for our community to come together to watch some powerful films, educate ourselves about issues that hit home, and engage in constructive discussions centered on solutions.
