Bachelor, Lowell are July/August artists at TBA Gallery

ALPENA – Watercolor artist Marilyn Bachelor and woodcarver Terry Lowell have been named the featured artists for July and August at Thunder Bay Arts Gallery.

A free reception for them both will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Friday, July 8, at the gallery, 127 W. Chisholm St., Alpena.

Marilyn Bachelor

Bachelor lives in The Villages, Fla., and Hubbard Lake. She holds a master’s degree from the University of Michigan and has been a nurse, a teacher and a professional artist. She enjoys gardening and golfing, as well as painting. She is past president and cofounder of Northeast Michigan Artists’ Guild.

In addition to gallery representation, Bachelor has had one-person shows in Florence, Ala. and at the Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan in Alpena. She has won many “Best of Show” awards in Alabama, Florida and Michigan.

She has earned a signature membership in the International Society of Experimental Artists. In 2016, her painting of “Fear Itself” was accepted into an exhibit in Washington, D.C. She has been painting all her life, but seriously for over 30 years and still enjoys the continuous challenge of creative expression with paint.

Terry Lowell

Lowell currently lives in Harrisville. He has a bachelor’s degree from Northern Michigan University. He was a Captain in the U.S. Army. He lived most of his life in Colorado and developed his self-taught skills of woodcarving, woodturning and stone carving while there. His career included governmental finance, city clerk, and management.

He has exhibited and sold sculptures and turnings in galleries and juried events in Colorado and Michigan. His interest in art developed at an early age and he knew that woodcarving would be his interest in retirement. He purchased his tools all during his working career and began carving in earnest later in life. His preferred subject for sculpture is wildlife. His wood turnings are embellished with design and graphics. He also experiments with finishes on his carvings and turnings.

His joy in the creative process is hopefully shared with the viewer.

Bachelor and Lowell’s art will be on display at TBAC during July and August, along with the works of 22 other local artists. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
