VFW Auxiliary plans for Memorial Day

ALPENA ­– The regular meeting of the VFW 2496 Auxiliary was presided over by President Darryl McQuarrie at 6 p.m. on May 10 with 12 members attending. The secretary minutes and treasurers report were given and approved pending audit. Cheryl gave information on the various committees and requested volunteers to fill the chairman positions for the 2022-2023 year.

Auxiliary grave flags will be placed at the cemetery starting at 10 a.m. on May 21 and will all be on by Memorial Day weekend. Checks for $130 from the last broomstick tournament and $350 from the men’s league pool banquet for helping serve their meal were presented.

The charter was draped for Karen Morton who passed on April 9. The topics for the VOD and PP essay scholarship contest were revealed and a discussion took place about what the 1st place award should be. The auxiliary voted to purchase a $50 life membership for Camp Trotter and to make a $200 donation to their general fund. It was announced that the tickets for this year’s Brown Trout Festival prize pack have arrived and need to be sold. Help will also be needed during the festival.

The June meeting date has been changed to 6 p.m. on the first Tuesday, June 7, because the hall is being used for the Pin-Ups on June 14 and other activities taking place throughout that day. Memorial Day ceremonies, May 30, are taking place at 9:30 a.m. at the courthouse, followed by the parade to Little Flanders Field with services starting at 11 a.m. The closing ritual was conducted the meeting adjourned at 7:20 p.m.
