Exchange Club sponsoring Fourth of July decorating contest

ALPENA — The Exchange Club of Alpena is hosting the Second Annual Independence Day Decorating Contest. This is an opportunity for Alpena area businesses and residents to showcase their patriotic spirit with a decorating contest.

“Last year with so many events canceled, we designed this decorating contest as a way for the community to celebrate,” said Brian Holmes, president of the Exchange Club of Alpena. “We encourage all Alpena businesses and residents to pull out all the stops and proudly display their red, white and blue decorations in their front window, yards, and porches.”

One of the Exchange Club’s programs of service is Americanism which promotes pride in our country, appreciation for the freedoms granted to American citizens, and gratitude to the men and women who serve/have served in the Armed Forces. Americanism celebrates the country’s rich, unique heritage and inspires unity from coast-to-coast.

“For years, Exchange Club members and their families have distributed flags to spectators along the parade route,” added Holmes. “While we are excited to once again be handing out flags at the parade, we had so much fun with the contest last year we decided to again offer this decorating contest as another reason to enjoy the Fourth of July this year.”

Last year’s business winners included Lappan Agency, Bolenz Jewelry and Jimmie Garant’s Party Store. Residential winners included Durkee home, Rouleau home, and Lewandowski home.

The contest is open to all Alpena businesses and residents. To register please email your name, address, and a photo of your completed decorated home or business to alpenaexchangeclub@gmail.com. The only rule for decorating — have fun but leave the politics out. Deadline for entries is June 25.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three businesses and top three residents. Last year’s winners are not eligible for prizes, but we hope they will continue to decorate. The community will also select a People’s Choice Award via the Exchange Club of Alpena’s Facebook page. The photo with the most likes by noon on July 2 will be named the People’s Choice Award winner.

“We will post one photo per location on the club’s Facebook page with the street name so community members can tour the decorated homes and businesses in person,” said Holmes. “The Exchange Club membership thinks this is a great addition to the family Independence Day celebrations.”
