VFW Auxiliary met

The regular meeting of the VFW 2496 Auxiliary was presided over by President Darryl McQuarrie at 6 p.m. on May 11, with 16 members attending.

Two applications for membership from Tim Bell and Kathleen Wojda were approved.

The secretary and treasurer reports were given and accepted, pending audit.

The quarterly audit from January to March was read and also approved.

Several committee chairmen gave brief reports and chairmen for the new year were selected. All officers and chairmen were installed.

A discussion about the May 1 District 13 meeting and gift basket fundraiser followed, and it was announced that the VFW 2496 Auxiliary earned a certificate for having the most attendees.

Nancy Flasck reported that she attended and helped serve breakfast at a veterans home ceremony and also distributed 100 personal hygiene kits donated from the auxiliary.

On May 8, four auxiliary members spent a total of eight hours doing MDOT road clean up on M-32.

Cheryl announced that the auxiliary grave flags need to be placed at the cemetery before Saturday, May 29 and the auxiliary will work with anyone interested in helping at their convenience.

It was decided to purchase Buddy Poppies for the auxiliary to distribute.

Steve is interested in trying to get the organization requalified to hold poker tournaments.

Several dates for upcoming events were announced including a dice run-benefit dinner on May 22, a hobo dinner May 29 and participation in the Memorial Day Ceremony starting at the courthouse and ending at Little Flanders Field.

The closing ritual was conducted and the president adjourned the meeting at 7:20 p.m. The next meeting is at 6 p.m. June 8.

Bridge results noted

Alpena Duplicate Bridge results for last week were Mark Wolshon and Dale Middleditch in first place, Linda Clegg and Audrey Stevens in second, and Gayle Nowak and Deanna Brege in third. All bridge players are welcome. For more information, call 989-595-5119 or 989-354-2306.

Parkinson’s group meets 1 p.m. today

The Alpena Area Parkinson’s Support Group will meet at 1 p.m. today at the First United Methodist Church, 167 E. Ripley Blvd. The guest speaker will be BJ Sander from the Alpena Senior Citizens Center. She will be demonstrating some low intensity exercises to keep us moving.
