Presque Isle District Library earns Community Impact grant

ROGERS CITY — The Presque Isle District Library is the recipient of the Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan, Community Impact grant for $1,500 to support this year’s Summer Reading Program.

The funding will be used to cover expenses to bring in three guest performances at the Rogers City Theater. Dynamic West Assemblies will present “Animal Tales” on Wednesday, June 16; the Sloan Museum’s Longway Planetarium will present “Worm Motels” on July 14; and Spencer Scharf with S3 Arts will present an interactive program called “Next Level Hidden Rock Painting.”

All three programs were created to engage the whole family for an exciting summer program series.

Along with the guest presenters, the library will host an “Active Art Sensory Sidewalk” available for children to engage in anytime during the day throughout the summer. Participants can jump, slide, twist, and turn — building art-based activity, motor skills, problem-solving skills, and literacy.

Throughout the community, the library is recognized as, “the community connection” and is an educational, artistic and cultural resource. Many of the classes, programs, and services offered to the public are free. This enables diversity of programs for all ages that range in a variety of disciplines including the arts, music, humanities, education, and literacy.

“Many of those who attend the Summer Reading Program are affected by the Michigan mandate that a child needs to be able to read by the third grade. This becomes problematic for many of our children due to the COVID-19 pandemic impact and restrictions with in-person classrooms”, stated Amber Alexander, library director.
