U.S.-23 Heritage Route
Learn about the U.S.-23 Heritage Route at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 23.
The U.S.-23 Heritage Route is a designated Pure Michigan Byway and extends for 200 miles from Standish to Mackinaw City. The U.S.-23 Heritage Route program has been in operation since 2004 and is run by a large group of volunteers from communities all along the Lake Huron shoreline. The presentation will discuss the history and structure of the U.S.-23 Heritage Route program, projects that have been completed, available resources to help promote tourism in communities along the route (including website, print materials, and video documentaries), how to participate in the program, and potential future projects.

Two years ago, presenter Karen Magness-Eubank decided to read one book, by one author from every country in the world. She is still in the process of discovering new-to-her authors, cultures, and ideas. From North Korea to Nigeria to Poland and beyond, she hopes to share this journey with attendees.
Magness-Eubank is an avid reader, author, and former teacher. She holds a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Fine Arts and Philosophy.
The Happening
The Happening is at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 25. This quarter's Happening happens at Brush Creek Mill in Hillman. The original grist mill was built on this site in the 1880s but fell into disrepair around 1980 and was torn down. During the 1990s, local residents launched an initiative to develop the site for cultural, educational and economic benefit to the community. Sue Floer, board chairman of the Mill, will share the story of community spirit and volunteer commitment that built this remarkable facility. Bring your lunch and a beverage and of course a few dollars for handcrafted items you'll find in the Mill Gift Shop. Plan on a 35 min. drive to Hillman; the Mill is located just across the bridge in town.
