Glenn Taylor is a retired engineer who had a long and varied career as a researcher at National Laboratories (INL, SRNL, PNNL). Among many things, he was loaned to IBM to work at its Center for Excellence on the development of its first vectorizing compiler, was a visiting professor in Computational Geosciences at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Thuwal, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and published around 40 papers in technical journals. He spent the last 15 years of his career developing and applying advanced statistical methods to risk analyses, primarily contaminant movement through the environment, and bringing the multi-physics/multi-scale paradigm into those analyses. He and his wife Katie permanently moved to Alpena a little over two years ago and cannot think of a better place to live out retirement.
Thursday, March 11 -- Mental health
On Thursday, March 11, join ALL at 11 a.m. to hear about mental health, the "other" health.
This presentation will be a general overview of mental health, developmental origins, "when things go bad," understanding diagnosis, relationships, and meeting your emotional well-being. As Americans continue to cope with the physical and economic challenges of a yearlong COVID-19 pandemic, this program will help participants focus on mental health implications as well.
Andy Blinder is a licensed psychologist with a master's degree in Humanistic and Clinical Psychology. He has an extensive background in various mental health settings including Common Ground Crisis Center, Clinical Care Manager Blue Care Network and private practice. Friday, March 12 -- Model railroading
At 2 p.m. on Friday, March 12, learn about model railroading in the "tip of the mitt."
Looking for a new hobby and an opportunity to meet enthusiastic model railroaders from Cadillac to the Big Mac Bridge, including Alpena members? This program, brought to you by Division 2, North Central Region of the National Model Railroad Association, presents the fun of model railroading using a combination of video and PowerPoint and a "show and tell" session by select members.
For example, you will hear from one of the railroaders who is from Presque Isle and "scratch" builds (hand builds) Colorado narrow gauge models.
Scott Pandorf is superintendent of Division 2. He, like other members of the National Model Railroad Association, is committed to education about railroading and model railroading as a hobby. He has been a model railroader since he was a teenager, is currently building a 30-foot by 40-foot multi-deck layout, and has taught clinics regionally and nationally on model railroads.
