Lions hear about contact sports

The Alpena Lions Club hosted Jon Studley, athletic director of Alpena High School, on Tuesday, Feb. 9.

Studley is a native of Northeastern Michigan. He and his family reside in Harrisville. A Tawas native, Studley spent 14 years working in the Ogemaw school system before coming to Alpena.

Last week the state government approved contact sports — basketball, wrestling, hockey and competitive cheer will be moving forward again. This means that Studley has a lot to do in organizing schedules and implementing procedures to assure that the students are safe.

Basketball and competitive cheer will be adhering to mandatory mask protocol. Hockey will require the use of face shields while competing. Wrestlers will be subjected to rapid covid testing prior to competing. All participants will be following mask protocol and social distancing when not competing. Spectators will be limited to two per participant and will be following mask and social distancing protocol as well — if things go smoothly then the number of spectators will grow to 250.

Livestreaming and broadcasting of games is being put in place. The season started this week, and game results will be posted on Alpena High and MHSAA websites.
