Alpena Lions Club hears from county road commission

ALPENA — Alpena County Road Commission Managing Director Ryan Brege addressed the Alpena Lions Club on Tuesday, Feb. 2. During the Zoom meeting, plans for the updating of the Harry Fletcher Bridge on Bagley were outlined.

The Harry Fletcher Bridge was constructed in 1976 at a cost of $390,000. Since it was built, the traffic crossing the bridge has grown to a daily traffic count in excess of 15,000 vehicles. The bridge, in conjunction with the business development along Bagley and M-32, has created a bottleneck and traffic concerns.

The new bridge will have a center lane, traffic lanes and protected non-motorized lanes (going North and South). The width of the bridge will expand from 38 feet to 79 feet to accommodate the increased auto and pedestrian traffic. This expansion will help to alleviate the traffic bottleneck, make turning safer and provide our community with a state-of-the-art bridge. The new Harry Fletcher Bridge will serve pedestrians, bicyclists, snowmobilers, and traffic well into the future. The construction will begin Monday, Feb. 8 and be completed by November 2021.

Twenty Alpena Lions were in attendance via Zoom and welcomed Ryan Brege and his presentation.

Alpena Lions Club new member induction

Betty Sander was inducted during the Tuesday February 2nd zoom meeting. She is the program manager of the Alpena Senior Citizens Center. Her lifetime of community experience will be an asset as she joins the Alpena Lions Club; Lion Ken Dully sponsored Sander and introduced her to the general membership. She will be formally inducted once COVID restrictions are lifted and the Alpena Lions Club can meet in person. Also at that time the Alpena Lions Club will honor new members Becky Lamay, Becca Brousseau, Barbara Sumerix and Jeff and Jodi Gilmet.
