The Association of Lifelong Learners has announced programs for next week, which will all be held online via Zoom livestream only. These programs are open to the public. Just send an email to ALL@alpenacc.edu to receive Zoom connection information. Feel free to share this list with your friends, relatives and other organizations.

Tuesday

At 2 p.m. on Tuesday, enjoy "Stories, Songs and Dances of the French Voyageur" with Genot Picor.

The Association of Lifelong Learners welcomes Picor back to Northeast Michigan. He will discuss and present interactive stories and songs and demonstrate simple French country dances. In old French Michigan, suffering from "mal de raquette" (swelling of the feet from wearing snowshoes) was the only excuse you could have for not dancing! Tune in with the whole family. Enjoy!

Picor is a storyteller, musician and dancer. He has presented educational entertainment to audiences of all ages from Temperance to Ironwood and from Niles to the Soo and many places in between. Genot has been a guest performer at the Thunder Bay Maritime Festival for the last 20 years.

Wednesday, Jan. 6

"Molitor: The Murder of a Northern Michigan King" will be presented at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 6.

Albert Molitor, a German immigrant, was the man most responsible for the founding of Rogers City in 1871. On an August evening in 1875, a group of 13 disgruntled farmers from the surrounding area came into town and shot Molitor and his secretary while they were working in his office. Even though the identities of the shooters were soon fairly common knowledge around Rogers City, nobody was charged with the crime for 16 years. When charges were eventually brought, the trials were held in Alpena and five men were found guilty and given life sentences in Jackson Prison. The two men responsible for the shootings, however, including the local businessman who succeeded Molitor as the most powerful man in the community, got off scot free.

A former member of the ALL Board, Mark Thompson, is executive director of the Presque Isle County Historical Museum. "Molitor," published in 2020, is his 11th local history book. He is currently working on two books, one of which will be out in the summer of 2021 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the founding of Rogers City.

Friday, Jan. 8

"Wuhan China -- The Covid 19 Virus and After" will be presented at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 8.

Currently, as of December 2020, Wuhan is virtually free of COVID-19 virus and has been since April; while we in the U.S. are preparing for a challenging winter trying to manage the spread of the virus. Containment in Wuhan was realized by deployment of 20,000 trained call tracers who were tasked with the responsibility of identifying people who had recent contact with ill patients, and they too were quarantined. All other citizens were isolated in their homes with limited opportunity to attend to market or other personal requirements. After 76 days, beginning January 23, isolation measures were relaxed. Citizens continue to exercise caution while most normal activities have resumed.

Richard Clute was a member of the faculty of the International School of Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, China from 2010 to 2017. His career in the U.S. includes being a faculty member of Alpena Community College, Curator of Anthropology at Jesse Besser Museum and director of a cultural resource management consulting service conducting projects in the Upper Great Lakes and Tennessee. Currently, Clute is back at the Besser Museum writing reports for archaeologically significant sites in Northeast Michigan and researching sources of Chinese food staples.
