Valerie Slaght to advise, help high school students

Valerie Slaght

Valerie Slaght is the new college adviser who will help students at Alpena High School and ACES Academy prepare for their post secondary education or training.

Slaght works for Advise MI, which is an AmeriCorps program hosted by the Michigan College Access Network. In her new role, Slaght said she would help students determine the most affordable college fit based on a student’s career goals.

“College does not necessarily mean a four-year university, but rather any form of post-secondary education including certificates and two-and four-year degrees,” she said.

Slaght can help students with college applications and fee waivers, financial aid, choosing a college, finding and applying for scholarships, writing essays and personal statements, interpreting financial aid award letters, transferring credits from Alpena Community College to another college, among others.

Slaght has office hours at both schools and can assist parents or students by appointment. She can be reached by calling 989-358-5243 or via email at slaghtv@alpenaschools.com.
