Salvation Army reopens stores

The Salvation Army reopened Family Thrift Stores in four northern Michigan locations on Monday. The stores have been closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic since March 16.

The stores in Gaylord, Cheboygan, Alpena and Houghton Lake opened for shopping from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Memorial Day. The stores will continue to accept donations from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Saturday, May 30. However, shopping at the stores will be suspended today and Wednesday to enable store managers to review and adjust their operations as deemed appropriate. The stores will reopen to shopping on Thursday.

Although these selected stores are reopening, the stores will continue to closely follow safety recommendations set forth by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and encourage shoppers and those dropping off donations do the same.

“The Salvation Army wants to protect the safety and well-being of not only our employees, but our dedicated thrift store shoppers as well,” said Lt. Col. John E. Turner, divisional commander of The Salvation Army Eastern Michigan Division. “We want everyone to stay healthy and reduce the risk of further spreading the COVID-19 virus.”

Founded by William and Catherine Booth in London, England in 1865, The Salvation Army is a faith-based, nonprofit organization dedicated to serving people in need without discrimination. This past year, The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit was involved in providing 2,493,786 meals and 573,968 nights of shelter for the homeless. The Salvation Army uses 87 cents of every dollar raised to provide direct services to people in need every day of the year.
