ROGERS CITY — Anyone looking for entertainment this weekend will find it at Rogers City Theater, where a dedicated cast will perform “Sister Act.”
The musical comedy opens tonight at 7:30 p.m. It will be playing at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday, then runs again next weekend at the same times.
Tickets are now $14 per adult, and still $6 per student. Tickets can be purchased at the box office beginning an hour before showtime, at 257 N. Third St., Rogers City.
The Rogers City Community Theatre production will feature “nun other” than Brittany VanderWall as the lead, Deloris, A.K.A. Sister Mary Clarence.
“She’s a night club dancer trying to make it in the business,” VanderWall said of Deloris. “Her boyfriend owns a night club.”
When she sees a murder, the police try to protect her by disguising her as a nun, a press release explains.
“When disco diva, Deloris Van Cartier, witnesses a murder, she is put in protective custody in the one place the cops are sure she won’t be a found: a convent! Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and uptight Mother Superior. Using her unique disco moves and singing talent to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church and community but, in doing so, blows her cover. Soon, the gang is giving chase, only to find them up against Deloris and the power of her newly found sisterhood.”
“This is my fifth show with Rogers City Community Theatre, and I’ve loved every minute of it,” VanderWall said. “It’s like a big family. It’s certainly a joy.”
She said the lead role has been both a delight and a challenge.
“I love to sing, and this role has really challenged my range,” she said, adding that some of the notes are so high that “I feel like I’m in the stratosphere. It’s been really fun to push my limits. It’s definitely made me a better performer.”
This is Director Jodi Kamyszek’s first musical.
“It has been a lot of fun,” she said. “A little challenging at times, since I’ve never directed a musical before.”
She said the cast has been a joy to work with.
“We have very dedicated actresses and singers,” Kamyszek said. “It’s just been wonderful.”
Kamyszek noted that Ashley Nowicki choreographed a lot of the dances, and that everyone adds their individual talents to the show.
In addition to VanderWall, the cast includes: Lawrence Anderson as Monsignor O’Hara and Ernie; Pennie Hoeft as Mother Superior; Ashley Nowicki as Sister Mary Robert; Carrie Wilson as Sister Mary Patrick, Donna Klein as Sister Mary Lazarus; Baylee Lijewski as Mary Martin of Tours; Ensemble Nuns Charlotte Heidemann, Anne Clapp, Darlene Nowicki, Kathy Talaska, Alison Marx, Elaine Heidemann (who also plays Sister Mary Theresa); Magnus Wilson as Eddie; Jeffrey Kamyszek as Cop; Mike Marx as Taxi Driver and Drag Queen; Karen Maher as Waitress and Hooker; Bob Starnes IV as Curtis; Karl Heidemann as Joey; Ed Perrault as Pablo; and Austin Arkwood as T.J.
VanderWall said older children might enjoy the show, but there are some violent scenes with guns, and some mild adult language.
“It’s mostly a comedy,” she added. “With some touching, heartwarming moments too.”
VanderWall hopes for a large audience.
“What really makes these performances is a big, excited audience,” she said. “We really feed off that, when we get them laughing, really engaging them. We love when people come out to support the local theater.”
“It has a message about sisterhood and togetherness, and accepting everybody,” Kamyszek said. “It’s a wonderful show. I don’t think anyone who comes to it will be disappointed. It’s a lot of fun. They’re in for a treat.”
