ALL presents January classes

The Association of Lifelong Learners is offering many interesting classes in January, in addition to regular weekly programming. Classes are listed below. For more information, or to join ALL, call 989-358-7207 or visit www.associationoflifelonglearners.org.

Unless otherwise noted, programs are held at Alpena Community College’s Madeline Briggs Center. All programs are open to ALL members, and some are open to the public, if noted.

Regular weekly programming includes pickle ball from 9 a.m. to noon on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the APlex, for $3.50 per hour, with Dick Bremer. On Mondays, ALL can learn to play the Ukulele from a new coordinator, Judy Nichols, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. On Tuesdays, ALL plays dominoes (Mexican Train Express) from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. On Fridays, ALL plays contract bridge from 12:30 to 3 p.m.

January programs are listed below.

¯ Thursday, Jan. 9 — From 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., ALL and the public will learn about recycling from Stan Mischley, the manager of the recycling facility, Alpena Resource Recovery Facility. ALL members will learn how the recycling market has been changed when China stopped accepting low-grade recyclables. This presentation is open to the public.

¯ Monday, Jan. 13 — From 3 to 4 p.m., ALL will learn about the services and activities that are offered at the Alpena Senior Citizens Center from Director Annie Hepburn.

¯ Tuesday, Jan. 14 — From 1 to 4 p.m., ALL members will have a chance to design their own collage. Bring a glue stick, scissors and a memento and join Ellen LaCross, a member of the Michigan Artists Guild. She will help members design a collage. Supplies will be provided.

¯ Wednesday, Jan. 15, 22 and 29 —

ALL will have a chance to learn how to play bridge or refresh their bridge game each Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon. Interested players are encouraged to come and play.

¯ Wednesday, Jan. 15 — ALL continues the writing series workshop: Sharing Our Stories led by Mary Ann Crawford, retired professor and director of the Writing Center at Central Michigan University. The sessions focus on writing, sharing, and helping members to revise and edit. The series meets from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month.

¯ Thursday, Jan. 16 — From 1 to 3 p.m., ALL will have a chance to make a rubber-stamped card and take it home with them. Meg Devers has been making home designed cards for 15 years and will share her supplies and knowledge of this creative activity.

¯ Thursday, Jan. 16 — ALL will attend the Alpena Civic Theatre performance of “Wait Until Dark” at 7:30 p.m. at the Civic Theatre, 401 River St. Tickets must be paid to ALL office by Jan. 8 at $14 each.

¯ Tuesday, Jan. 21 — From 1:30 to 3 p.m., ALL will hear from the Rev. Bob Case, Pastor Emeritus from the First Congregational United Church of Christ. His topic will be “Conservative and Progressive Christianity.” Join Case for a discussion of this topic with views from scholars N.T. Wright and the late Marcus Borg.

¯ Wednesday, Jan. 22 — ALL will gather at noon for lunch at Thunder Bay River Restaurant on 1315 W. Chisholm St. Invite a friend to join, but let the ALL office know for a head count.

¯ Wednesday, Jan. 22 — ALL Camera Club meets each month to share the joy of photography. ALL members are welcome to join this group of photographers with varying degrees of expertise and experience who are willing to share. This group meets from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month.

¯ Thursday, Jan. 23 — From 1 to 3 p.m., ALL will have part two of make and take a card. Meg Divers will share her supplies and offer her help as ALL members make a birthday card for an adult and child. Then participants will take the finished card home with them.

¯ Monday, Jan. 27 —  The public is welcome to join ALL to get caught up with “What’s happening in Lansing” with Michigan’s 106th District Rep. Sue Allor from 3-4 p.m. to learn about potential legislation that may be introduced in the new term.

¯ Tuesday, Jan. 28 — From 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., ALL will have a chance to try curling at Northern Lights Arena. After a brief introduction, you can try the sport out. Wear warm clothes and bring clean soled tennis shoes. The charge is $10 for this class.

¯ Wednesday, Jan. 29 — From 1:30 to 3 p.m., ALL will learn about Pulsed Electro Magnetic Field Therapy (PEMF) from Chris Coultes, Certified Lifestyle Consultant. PEMF is used for wound and bone healing, anxiety and depression.

¯ Thursday, Jan. 30 — From 1 to 2 p.m. ALL will learn about Pigeon River Country State Forest and its Discovery Center. The State Forest is the largest contiguous block of state-owned land in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. Conservationists Rudi Edel and Sandy Franz will talk about the wildlife on the property and the Discovery Center. Join these naturalists to hear about this newly created Discovery Center.
