The Alpena NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) formation team will meet from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Besser Technical Center Room 107D at Alpena Community College.

Veteran coffee hour Thurs.
Alpena Veteran’s coffee hour is from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center at 500 W. Fletcher St. in Alpena. The event is presented by the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Northeast Michigan, the United Way of Northeast Michigan, and Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
Trick-or-treating at
Turning Brook, Greenview
Trick-or-treaters are welcome to come to area retirement centers to receive candy from residents.
Turning Brook Assisted Living will hold trick-or-treating from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Halloween (Thursday) at 300 Oxbow Dr. in Alpena.
Medilodge Greenview on Golf Course Road will also be passing out candy on Halloween for visiting children.
Healthy Connections Nov. 7
Learn about “Your Gut-Brain Connection and Microbiome” in a seminar at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, at Alpena Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 4029 U.S.-23 South in Alpena.
Evelyn Kissinger, M.S., R.D., will present the program. She is a lifestyle consultant, registered dietitian, international speaker, author and teacher, and the nutrition director for Lifestyle Matters. She will talk about how your microbiome, or gut bacteria, influences your energy, weight, brain health, immunity and more.
A light supper will be provided. Pre-register by Nov. 2 to reserve your spot by calling 989-916-8764 or by emailing above_the_45th@yahoo.com. Registration at the door is on a space-available basis only.
The seminar is free, but donations will be accepted.
Trunk-or-treat at St. Paul Lutheran in Hubbard Lake
St. Paul Lutheran Church, on the corner of Nicholson Hill Road and Hubbard Lake Road in Hubbard Lake, will host trunk-or-treat from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, rain or shine.
Come meet a Michigan State Police Trooper and other special surprise guests. Find out who is the littlest ghost, the scariest creature and most original costume.
Refreshments will include apple cider, doughnuts, hot chocolate and coffee, and candy and gifts for all participants.

Alpena Symphony
Orchestra concert Nov. 3
The Alpena Symphony Orchestra will perform a fall concert, “Autumn Serenade,” at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, at the First United Methodist Church, 167 S. Ripley Blvd. in Alpena. The concert will consist of soloists and ensembles performing.
The concert is free but donations are welcome. A reception will follow the performance in the social hall.
