LWV name change, programs set

League of Women Voters of Alpena County (LWVAC) members have voted to change their official name to the League of Women Voters of Northeast Michigan (LWVNM). The name change reflects the growth and impact of LWV not only in Alpena County, but also in Alcona and Presque Isle Counties. The League has been active in all three counties, holding candidate forums before elections, distributing nonpartisan voting guides, registering new voters, and, more recently, implementing a public education campaign to inform area citizens about their new voting rights which were approved by voters in 2018.

Like League members in Alpena and Alcona Counties, League members living in Presque Isle County hear positive comments from residents about the value of the League, the importance of the nonpartisan information it disseminates, and the respect for the League as an important organization focused on “empowering voters and defending democracy.”

Upcoming voting rights programs explaining changes since the passage of Proposal 3 at area branches of Presque Isle District Library include:

¯ Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Onaway branch

¯ Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Millersburg branch

¯ Monday, Oct. 14 at 6 p.m. at Posen branch

¯ Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m., Rogers City branch

¯ Thursday, Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. at Grand Lake branch.
