ALPENA — Musicians have long been telling the world how to live. And much of that advice is wise.

“When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace,” Jimi Hendrix said.

There’s something about music that speaks to the body and brings a sense of peace to the listener, if it is music they enjoy. Come enjoy a peaceful afternoon full of musical talent on Sunday, as the 30 Days of Peace continues with the annual Youth Celebration of Life Concert at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church. The celebration will feature a variety of young singers, musicians and dancers from the community.

“We have dancers, flute players, piano players, vocal soloists,” said Carol Skiba, member of the Alpena Peace Coalition and organizer of the 30 Days of Peace.

She said the idea is to honor the youth and celebrate their talents and their “promise.”

“It’s a sharing of the youth of the community, in the spirit of the 30 Days of Peace,” Skiba said.

She explained that their promise is “the potential each one of them has” in choosing their direction and aiming to reach the goals they set for themselves.

The Rev. Bill McClure will be the master of ceremonies.

“He introduces each student that comes up to perform, and tells some of their hopes and dreams for each one,” Skiba noted, adding that he will say the performer’s name, grade, what they will perform, their interests and future plans.

Jean Brown-Baker is the accompanist. Some performers are students of Julie Wood, some have studied under MaryAnn Hubbard, Loretta Beyer, and more.

Girls from The Dance Centre will dance down the center aisle to open the concert.

“I think that will be a wonderful opening,” Skiba added.

The opening piece will be “This Is Me” sung by One Voice Children’s Choir, and performed by the following students from The Dance Centre, under the direction of Christine Giordano: Emma Armstead, Callie Brousseau, Lucy Cook, Calee Gildner, Ryley Kennedy, Maddie Linton, Taryn McConnell and Ellie Wood.

Other performers include: Jinglong Yang singing “When We Were Young,” Amaya Brousseau singing “Oceans,” Renee Webb and Makayla Brenton singing “Hallelujah,” Tom Sheridan on piano playing “Painting The Sun,” Kaylynn Plush singing “Blowing In The Wind,” Dani Losinski performing “Shy,” Olivia Gerhart performing “Cockeyed Optimist,” Davin Kuznicki performing “Steppin’ Out With My Baby,” Alexandria Browski singing “It’s A Hard Life,” Bruno Mucciante singing “Haven’t Met You Yet,” Jona Hauff on vocals and piano performing an original composition, soloist Ashlynn Brown performing “Glow,” Addison Wesaw singing “Let It Be,” Jolyne Sigmon singing “Song For The Unsung Hero,” and Evan Goff singing “You Raise Me Up.”

“For the concert, we always conclude with ‘Over The Rainbow,'” Skiba said.

The words are included on the program for the audience to sing along. Brown-Baker will be on piano, Hannah Burger and Sydnie Lipski playing flutes, and Hubbard will be conducting for the final song.

Donations are appreciated to help offset the costs of bringing in speakers and hosting events for the 30 Days of Peace, which is organized by volunteers. For more information, call Skiba at 989-916-7049.
