Lions hear about library millage

The Alpena Lions Club received some club updates and heard about the upcoming library millage during their lunch meeting on Tuesday.

Lion Paulette Roznowski reported the handicap swing, made by the Lions and placed at Starlight Beach in 2017, was repaired and a handicap sign was posted on the swing.

On Saturday, Aug. 17, the Lions will be offering free children’s vision screening from 12-3 p.m. at the Alpena County Fair.

Program chair Randy Boboltz invited Eric Magness-Eubank from the Alpena County Library to speak to the group about the upcoming millage request the library has on the ballot. Magness-Eubank said the money from the millage will go to necessary building repairs.

The largest issue and most important repair is the air handling system. The humidity in the building is causing rust to develop on electronics (computers, printers, etc) as well as equipment used for maintenance. The humidity also is damaging to the books and shelving. There are other repairs the library needs and they will be done in phases to minimize disruption to staff and visitors.

If the library millage passes, repairs will start in February 2020 with a completion time of one year.
