Brain health seminar Sat.

Dr. Laurie Mischley will be speaking at the Alpena Senior Citizens Center, 501 River Street, at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Her presentation will be on Nutrition and Brain Health and how it impacts your life.

Dr. Mischley studied naturopathic medicine at Bastyr University and epidemiology and nutritional sciences at the University of Washington. Her work is focused on identifying the nutritional requirements unique to individuals with neurodegenerative diseases.

Dr. Mischley maintains a clinical practice at Seattle Integrative Medicine focused on nutrition and neurological health. She grew up in Alpena and is graduate of Alpena High School.

Children’s band concert

Alpena City Band will perform a free children’s concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Bandshell at Bayview Park in Alpena.

Stuff the Bus starts Friday

United Way of Northeast Michigan will hold its Stuff the Bus back to school drive from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday through Monday, with a big yellow school bus in the Walgreen’s parking lot on the corner of Bagley and M-32.

Bring school supplies to donate, either to the bus, or to the United Way office inside the Aplex.

Used book sale Friday

MidMichigan Medical Center-Alpena volunteers book sale is in the hospital lobby from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday.

Ice cream social Friday

Grace Episcopal Church, 13488 Long Rapids Rd., will host an ice cream social from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, with salads, baked beans, sandwiches, grilled hot dogs, homemade pies and ice cream. For more information, call Sherrie O’Brien at 989-379-3915.

Art Walk downtown Fri.

Alpena Art Walk is from 5 to 8 p.m. downtown Friday, with artist demonstrations at the five art galleries downtown: Art in the Loft, Forty-Five North Art Gallery, My Glass Wings, Studio Rubedo and Thunder Bay Arts Council Gallery.

Special activities include:

¯ Art in the Loft: Artist Kati Meek, working on a small loom, will incorporate organic materials such as dried flowers into her weaving.

¯ Forty-Five North Art Gallery: Meet Pen and Ink Artist Chuck Schroeder.

¯ My Glass Wings: Meet Alexis Werda.

¯ Studio Rubedo: Preview the new location at 213 Chisholm Street and meet Brian Schorn.

¯ Thunder Bay Arts Council Gallery: Anita Harmon will demonstrate woodburning and Kay Kline will paint scarves.

Street performers will also be stationed downtown from 6 to 8 p.m.

Future Art Walks are Aug. 30, Sept. 27 and Nov. 29.

Monday events

The following events are happening Monday, and were not able to be in this week’s Community Calendar, because of limited space.

∫ ALL plays pickle ball from 9 a.m. to noon at the APlex. ALL can learn to play the ukulele each Monday from Gloria Beth, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at ACC’s M. Briggs Center. For information, call 989-358-7207.

∫ Alpena Senior Citizens Center offers low-impact exercises at 9:30 a.m. and euchre at 12:30 p.m.

∫ Bay View Center hosts Writer’s Group is at 11 a.m.

∫ A summer swim lesson session begins from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the Plaza Pool. This session is Monday through Thursday, for $50.

∫ Alpena Duplicate Bridge Club plays at 12:45 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 167 S. Ripley. Call 989-354-2306 for more information.

∫ Ukulele Jam Session for all ages and levels is from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Harriville branch of Alcona County Library. Call 989-724-6796 to sign up.
