Rev. Case to speak on “near-death experiences”

Rev. Bob Case will lead a discussion on “near-death experiences” at 10 a.m. this Thursday, and again on June 13 and 20, in the fellowship hall of First Congregational United Church of Christ.

The church is located at 201 S. Second Ave. in Alpena.

This is Case’s 50th year of pastoral ministry. As the Pastor Emeritus of Alpena’s First Congregational UCC, he reflects back on “anomalies” he has experienced as a minister and as a Hospice chaplain — things that he called “coincidences” at the time, or matters that “don’t fit reality” as we normally understand it.

One that stands out to him is termed “near-death experiences” — experiences people have when the brain is not functioning. Up to 20% of people who have cardiac arrest report such experience — floating, out-of-body observations, going through a tunnel, seeing faces of people who have passed away, being surrounded by light, a comforting sense of peace, and so forth. Such an experience may change a person’s outlook on life.

Case will start each class with a video presentation by a member of the Division of Perceptual Studies in the Psychiatric Dept. of the University of Virginia, who have scientifically studied these phenomena for 50 years. Is the mind a product of the brain, or is it something greater? Does the mind survive death?

The class is open to the public at no cost. Plan for one-and-a-half-hours on each Thursday morning.

Call the church if you plan to attend at 989-356-1795.
