Forum planned Oct. 15 on ballot proposals

A forum will be held Oct. 15 on the three proposals on the Nov. 6 election ballot. The forum, organized by the League of Women Voters of Alpena County, will be held from 6-8:30 p.m. in the Alpena Community College Granum Theatre.

The issues to be reviewed are marijuana (Proposal 1), ending gerrymandering (Proposal 2) and voter rights (Proposal 3). The first part of the evening will be a review of the ballot proposals by league member Pauline Buchner, using handouts and a PowerPoint presentation. Educational materials will be available, such as information on how to use VOTE411 to find specific individualized ballot information.

In the second part of the evening, league member Bob Kennedy will discuss local and state league support of Proposals 2 and 3. If league members have studied an issue and come to agreement, as in this case, the league takes a stand.

However the league continues its policy of neither supporting nor opposing candidates, parties or any issues that members have not studied.

The league sponsors forums as part of its mission, which reads, “The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.”
