Jazz concert opens TBAC 2018-19 showcase series

Thunder Bay Arts Council presents the first event in its 2018-19 showcase series. The Paul Keller at Sundown Quartet will perform Sunday at 4 p.m. in the inspiring and intimate setting of the Art in the Loft Gallery.

This talented group of veteran Michigan jazz performers are dedicated to entertaining audiences of all ages with a personalized brand of high-energy jazz and swing. They will present an eclectic program of fun and familiar selections from the Great American songbook and possibly a few Paul Keller original compositions.

Featured in the group are vocalist/clarinetist Sarah D’Angelo, saxophonist Steve Wood, pianist Duncan McMillan and drummer Stephen Boegehold. Their hallmark is a unique tonal blend of clarinet and saxophone in a harmony not often heard in jazz.

The quintet has delighted jazz lovers across Michigan with performances at the Detroit Institute of Arts, Mackinac Island Grand Hotel Jazz Festival, Michigan Jazz Festival, Grand Rapids Jazz Festival, Lansing Old Town Jazz Festival and Glen Arbor Art Association’s Manitou Music Festival.

Last year, 13 of Keller’s original orchestra arrangements were performed at Carnegie Hall by Dave Bennett and the New York Pops. He recently returned from a 30-day tour of Australia with jazz superstar Diana Krall, a week with Taipei Jazz Orchestra at the Taiwan Jazz Festival and sold out shows at San Francisco’s SF woth saxophonist Harry Allen.

Buying tickets in advance for the afternoon concert is recommended. Advance adult tickets are two for $25, but at the door will be $15 each. As at all TBAC events, children and students will be admitted free of charge.

The advance discounted tickets may be obtained through the TBAC website, www.thunderbayarts.org or during TBAC’s office hours at 127 W. Chisholm and at Neiman’s Family Market. Admission is also available to holders of 2018-19 TBArts Passes.
