Watercolor art class offered at Art in the Loft

Art in the Loft offers a watercolor class June 9 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. with instructor and artist Betty Bea Washburn. The class is titled, “The Maple, The Birch and The Pine.”

Michigan trees make stunning subjects for watercolor painting. Trees can form a stand-alone landscape or the back-drop for architecture. When painted intuitively, the results can be spectacular.

Come enjoy a free-flowing floating and pouring watercolor experience with Washburn, who received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Art and Education from College of Wooster in Ohio and a Master’s Degree in Education from Western Michigan University. She is a retired public school art teacher.

Washburn began painting professionally in 1979 and has paintings placed in both public and private domains. Most notably, her work comprises the entire collection of 70 paintings and a mural at the Southwestern Michigan Rehabilitation Center in Battle Creek. Thirty of her paintings are part of a permanent collection at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall.

Washburn enjoys sharing her watercolor experience with adult students while continuing to paint for galley collections.

“My goal is to infuse the paintings with energy that remains within the work long after the brush had been lifted from the paper,” she said.

Students should pack a lunch. A supply list is available upon registration. Cost is $110 per student.

To register for the class, call the Loft at 356-4877 or go online to www.artintheloft.org.
