At the Jan. 8 Court of Honor for Boy Scout Troop 92, longtime Scoutmaster Dennis Johnson was presented with a framed collectible patch set from this year’s National Jamboree and a commemorative Golden Boy Eagle Scout Tribute Edition Henry Rifle by both current and past scouts.
Johnson started his career as a Cub Scout. He worked his way through the Cub Scout ranks in Pack 3092 and earned the Arrow of Light. Crossing over to Boy Scout Troop 92 he worked through the Boy Scout ranks completing the Pro Deo et Patria religious award and earned his Eagle Scout in 1964.
During this time he served in many positions in the troop including senior patrol leader and den chief to Pack 3092. As a member of the Order of the Arrow he became a vigil member as a youth, served as chapter chief and was a member of the chapter’s dance team which won a dance competition in Mackinaw.
Johnson began his Scouter career as the water front director at Camp Greilick near Traverse City and worked on the Camp Tipaco staff near Kalkaska in 1971. In 1972-73 he served as Webelo den leader in Okemos while attending Michigan State University. After graduating from MSU, he returned to Alpena where he served as cubmaster for Pack 3092 and then as scoutmaster of Troop 92 until 2015.
During these years of service he lead training for fellow scouters at the district and council levels earning him the Thunderhead District Award of Merit in 1976. In 2004 he completed the advanced adult leader training Wood Badge course.
He has also earned awards for his outstanding leadership to youth in the Boy Scouts of America. First he was nominated and received the Silver Beaver Award, a council level award given for outstanding longtime service to youth by a registered Scouter. The average tenure for a Silver Beaver is 10 years.
Next he was nominated for and received the National Lutheran Association on Scouting Lamb Award. He was nominated by members of St. Paul Lutheran Church.
The purpose of the Lamb Award is two fold: 1) To acknowledge the distinguished service of Lutheran adults in fostering the spiritual growth of youth through church and civic youth serving agency programs (Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of the USA). 2) To increase the use and quality of the civic agency programs in the Lutheran congregations as a part of their ministries with youth.
Johnson continues to serve as a committee member of this troop and is working at the district level to improve training for scouters and district services.
