Students to watch Supreme Court in Cheboygan

On April 26, students from Presque Isle Academy and Rogers City High School will join other students from northern Michigan in getting to witness the Michigan Supreme Court at the Cheboygan Opera House as a part of the Court Community Connection program.

The Court Community Connection program is a public education program started in 2007 with the goal of teaching high school students about the appellate courts and Michigan judicial system by having the Michigan Supreme Court travel from the Hall of Justice in Lansing to various communities to hear oral arguments.

In Cheboygan, the Supreme Court justices will hear oral arguments from People of Michigan vs. Candace Guyton. Afterward, Chief Commissioner Daniel Brubaker will debrief the students in a session that will include the attorneys of both the appellant and appellee.

The event marks only the 27th time that the Supreme Court has traveled to hear a case in a different location.
