The Alcona High School girls basketball team defeat Whittemore Prescott, 44-30, on Thursday. Leading Alcona was Elliyana Grimshaw with 16 points and Gracyn Tracy with 11 points. Claire Somers contributed nine points, Piper Whitefield and Joanna Steiner added three, and Rilee Tracy rounded out the night with two points. PREP ROUNDUP: Hillman, Alcona basketball teams win

Hillman High School’s boys basketball team improved to 8-5, and 4-1 in the North Star League, with a win over Hale, 48-45, on Tuesday. The Tigers started slow and with a light bench being down a player who was sick and a late injury in the fourth to point guard Cuyler Schultz. And, despite going into the fourth quarter with a 17-point lead, Hillman had to battle to the end, finishing with five players due to foul trouble and injuries. The Alcona High School girls basketball team lost to Rogers City on Friday, 53-37. Leading the team for Alcona was Elliyana Grimshaw with 13 points, Claire Somers with 11, and Gracyn Travis with 10. Rilee Tracy also contributed three points.

Knights of Columbus to host free throw competition

The Hillman/Atlanta area Knights of Columbus is hosting its first round of the Free Throw Championship for girls and boys ages 9 to 14 on Sunday. The event will be held at Hillman High School.
