PREP ROUNDUP: Posen drops season opener, Alcona wins at home

OSCODA–A slow start out of the gate was too much for the Posen girls basketball team to rally back from on Monday.

Posen outscored Oscoda 33-30 over the final three quarters of play, but Oscoda’s 22-8 lead by the end of the first quarter was enough for the Owls to hold on for a 52-41 win.

Ella Szatkowski led Posen (0-1) with 10 points and Makayla Kamyszek had eight.

“The first quarter was a killer for us,” Posen coach Karl Momrik said. “We outscored them the rest of the way, but we fell behind to much to make it up.”

Posen plays Thursday at Hillman.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Alcona 47, Mio 13

LINCOLN — The Alcona girls basketball team began the season with a dominating win on Monday, topping Mio 47-13.

Alcona (1-0) outscored Mio 22-0 in the first quarter and cruised from there.

Lilly Bilbey had 12 points for Alcona, Karen Sharboneau had nine, and Rachel Layton had seven.

“We came out of gate with lots of energy and put the game away early. I was really happy with the way we ran the floor,” Alcona coach Mark Feldhiser said. “It was a good first game. We had good balance and everyone got some minutes in.”

Alcona’s JV team won 34-12 behind 11 points from Sage Gauthier and Emma Travis added eight.

Alcona plays at Tawas on Tuesday.
