Schools in northern Michigan OK for soccer, volleyball, swim

EAST LANSING (AP) — High schools in the Upper Peninsula and much of the northern Lower Peninsula can compete in fall soccer, volleyball and swimming, officials said Thursday.

But schools in other regions of Michigan need to wait to hear more from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, the Michigan High School Athletic Association said.

“We need more answers before we can give all of our member schools the go-ahead to play each other again, and the majority of our schools are in regions that are not yet allowed to take part in volleyball, soccer and swim,” executive director Mark Uyl said.

Schools that have the green light are in regions 6 and 8, which cover the Upper Peninsula and nearly 20 counties in the northern Lower Peninsula. There will be limits on the number of people who can watch a contest.

Region 6–the Traverse City Region– includes Alpena as well as its Big North Conference opponents, Gaylord, Petoskey, Cadillac, Traverse City Central and Traverse City West.

Region 6 also includes Presque Isle County, home to Posen, Rogers City and Onaway, and Montmorency County, home to Hillman and Atlanta.

Oscoda and Alcona, in Alcona and Oscoda Counties respectively, are in Region 4.

Football is being moved to spring from fall to reduce the risk of the coronavirus. The MHSAA said teams can have 16 contact practice days from Aug. 24 through Oct 31.
