Slow start hurts ACC women in loss to Raiders

Sometimes it’s possible to lose a game in the opening minutes of a game.

Thus was the case Wednesday for the Alpena Community College women’s basketball team as they got off to a dreadful start, dealt with some adversity and weren’t unable to overcome a poor start in a 70-51 loss to Oakland Community College at Park Arena.

The Lumberjacks were shaky in the first few minutes of the game and Oakland took advantage of what seemed to be a timid Alpena team as the Raiders opened the game on a 13-2 run.

Oakland was able to build on its lead throughout the opening quarter as the Lumberjacks were unable to find its rhythm. Things went from bad to worse for ACC when sophomore guard Emma Jore went down with an injury in the final minutes of the first quarter. By the end of the period, ACC trailed 23-7.

The Raiders scored the first six points of the second quarter to build their lead even more and Oakland held a 38-19 halftime lead to keep the Lumberjacks on their heels.

Alpena seemed to rally a bit and came out with a newfound energy to begin the second half.

Despite being in a hole and facing an uphill battle to get back into the game, the Lumberjacks did all they could to cut into the lead. A big part of that was the play of Dakota Prevo who did all she could to will ACC back into the game.

Prevo recorded another double-double, finishing with a game high 24 points and 12 rebounds as Alpena cut the lead to 53-39 after three quarters.

Mollie Girard hit a three early in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 11 at 55-44 and it looked as if the Lumberjacks were on the verge of a big comeback, but Oakland clamped down and it was as close as Alpena was able to get the rest of the game.

Along with Prevo, Brooke Nguyen added 14 points for the Lumberjacks, including burying four triples on the night.

Four Raiders scored in double-figures as Oakland was paced by Debraya Edwards who finished with 14 points. Mileisha Rodriguez added 13 points and Gabby Futch and Janessa Franklin each chipped in with 10 points apiece in the win.
