PREP ROUNDUP: Onaway boys defeat Bellaire; Fairview girls top RC

BELLAIRE–Jager Mix scored 18 points, Kevin Pearson added 13 and the Onaway boys basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 50-40 win over Bellaire on Wednesday.

Spencer Nash added 10 points and Austin Nash had five for the Cardinals (4-14).

Onaway trailed 13-12 after one quarter, but rallied to lead 29-19 at halftime and 42-34 after three quarters.

“Defensively, we played a real nice game. The guys worked hard and played disciplined,” Onaway coach Eddy Szymoniak said. “We moved the ball well and attacked when we needed to.”

Onaway hosts Johannesburg-Lewiston on Friday.

Ogemaw Heights 56, Alcona 46

LINCOLN–The Alcona boys basketball team fought hard on Senior Night in its home finale, but came up short against Ogemaw Heights, losing 56-46 on Tuesday.

Alcona (9-10) played the Falcons close in the first quarter, but struggled in the second quarter and was limited to two points.

Both sides played to a 16-16 tie after one quarter and Ogemaw led 25-18 at halftime. Ogemaw pushed its lead to 43-29 after three quarters and Alcona outscored Ogemaw 17-13 in the fourth quarter.

“Hats off to Ogemaw, they’ve got the complete package with great inside play and guard play,” Alcona coach Ryan Bilbey said.

Aidan Wrobel led Alcona with 12 points and Zach Stephenson added 11.

Tyler Eedy led the Falcons with 15 points and Merik Hodgins and Hudson Hodgins added 13 points each.

Alcona plays at Roscommon on Thursday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Fairview 45,

Rogers City 40

FAIRVIEW–The Rogers City girls basketball team came up just short of victory on Wednesday, losing to Fairview 45-40.

Fairview (10-8) led 16-11 after one quarter and 25-21 at halftime. The Eagles upped their lead to 37-29 after three quarters. The Hurons cut the lead to three in the fourth quarter, but could pull no closer.

“They attacked the basket better than we did and got some easy shots inside,” Rogers City coach Duane Pitts said of the Eagles. “We didn’t play very good defensively tonight. When they attacked, they got around us for layups and easy bunnies.”

Kyley LaFleche led Rogers City (4-15) with 18 points. Jaedyn Winton led Fairview with 20 points and Kaitlyn Bowers added 14.

“It was an up-and-down game and we struggled defensively,” Fairview coach Marc Winton said.

Rogers City hosts Onaway on Thursday.
