GRAND RAPIDS — The Alpena Community College cross country team battled both 85 degree temperatures and high humidity and still came out with their best race of their season. Out of 13 Junior College teams competing, the Lumberjacks finished fourth in the JC division at the Knight-Raider Invite held in Grand Rapids.

“This was the hottest day we’ve raced in the past eight years” ACC coach Mark Jacobs said. “We knew it was going to be hot so we focused on hydration all week. Other runners were dropping like flies and several were taken to the hospital by ambulance. My guys were physically and mentally ready for a tough day and it showed by our outstanding race.”

Tylor Ross (Fairview) led the Lumberjacks with a season best 28:42. Ross was followed by Caleb Burger (Alpena) 30:19, Mason Kaniszewski (Tawas) 32:18, Tyler Cherry (Gaylord) 32:35, Aidan Francis (Memphis) 32:59, Musa Kabbah (Voinjama, Liberia) 34:36, Duncan Ross (Rogers City) 34:54 and Nate Robey (Big Rapids) 37:23. Both Kabbah and Duncan Ross ran career bests.

Former Alpena Wildcat and Alpena Lumberjack Ryan Wirgau (Spring Arbor) also ran the race with a time of 31:53.

The Lumberjacks travel next Friday to Graying to compete at the Kirtland Firebird Invitational held at Hanson Hills.
