Offense carries the day

Owls score early and often to defeat Posen

POSEN–Oscoda’s offense was too much for the Posen softball team to handle on Wednesday.

Macy Kellstrom and Lauren D’Nuzio each hit a home run and the Owls defeated Posen in a doubleheader, 9-4 and 15-5 (five innings).

The top of the Owls’ lineup did a lot of the damage, but Oscoda’s ability to hit up and down its lineup and pile up runs quickly paved the way to victory.

Kellstrom went yard to center field on the first pitch of the nightcap and six batters later, D’Nuzio deposited a three-run shot over the left field fence. Oscoda sent 10 batters to the plate in its first turn at the plate and scored six runs on six hits.

Oscoda added a run in each of the next two innings.

Posen made contact all day against Oscoda starter Emma Kane, but by the time the Vikings were able to plate runs, the deficits were too big to overcome.

“We were down a couple of starters and the girls got rattled from the get-go,” Posen coach Wayne Karsten said. “Mentally, it’s a always a struggle to play from behind.”

The Vikings (14-8) fell behind 10-0 after three and a half innings before finally scoring a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, after Faith Romel doubled to score Ava Wesner.

Oscoda scored five more runs in the top of the fifth inning, taking advantage of a pair of errors, a bases-loaded walk and an RBI single.

Posen responded with a four-run fifth inning, which included a two-run shot to left field from Faith Romel. One batter before Romel, Wesner doubled to right field to score two runs.

“The girls didn’t give up. They kept battling,” Karsten said. “I’m proud of the way they played.”

Faith Romel and Brooke Ciarkowski each had three hits for Posen and Hannah Stone and Wesner each had two hits.

Emily Walker led Oscoda with three hits and Kane and Kellstrom each had two.

The Owls got going quickly at the plate, scoring twice in the first inning of the opener and added seven more runs over the next two innings.

Oscoda was able to make consistent contact at the plate, finding the gaps for numerous singles. Of the 11 hits the Owls collected in the opener, all of them were singles. Oscoda’s ability to string them together at the right time combined with a few Posen errors and walks, made for a big day offensively.

Kane had a pair of two-run singles and finished with three hits and five RBI from the third spot in the battling order; Batting from the leadoff spot, Kellstrom had four hits and two RBI.

Posen attempted to rally in the bottom of the sixth inning, plating three runs before Oscoda recorded an out to make it 9-4. Leadoff hitter Riley Krajniak had an RBI single, Posen scored another run on a fielder’s choice and scored again after an error.

The Vikings had runners on first and second with one out, but Oscoda ended the game after a fly ball to centerfield and a grounder from shortstop to first base.

Makayla Kamyszek, who pitched for the Vikings, finished with two hits and Wesner had two hits and scored twice.

Posen will play at Hale on Friday and attempt to win the North Star League’s Little Dipper division title.
