Alcona baseball splits with Tawas

LINCOLN — The Alcona baseball team split with Tawas in a doubleheader Friday at Alcona High School.

The Tigers edged the Braves 3-1 in game one, but fell 17-2 in the nightcap.

Both teams were paced by strong pitching in game one as Alcona’s Jon Surgener allowed just four hits and struck out six over a complete six innings and earned the win on the mound.

Jakob Turner got the Alcona offense going in the first inning when he singled home Jacob Sytek.

Sytek, gavin Walker and Josh Kilbourn each collected multiple his in the game with Walker swiping two bases.

“Jon had another great night on the mound and we played good defense behind him,” Alcona coach Nathan Walker said. “I love seeing that as a coach. We took advantage of some opportunities and scored a few runs which ended up being enough.”

Tawas’ bats woke up in the nightcap as they rolled to a lopsided win.

The Braves took an early lead on costly errors made in the field by Alcona.

Surgener went 2-for-3 with Tanner Stephenson and Pierce Bilbey each collecting a hit.

Stephenson got hit with the loss on the mound.

“At this point in the long week we were hurting for pitching. Zach threw well, but Tawas put the ball in play and we couldn’t make plays behind him,” Walker said. “This early in the year we are still working on some things and hopefully we will have it all worked out come June.”
