Wildcats top Gaylord in BNC match

GAYLORD–The Alpena High volleyball team earned its first conference win on Wednesday, sweeping Gaylord in a Big North Conference match.

Alpena won 25-21, 25-22 and 25-15.

Alpena’s offensive attack was led by Adranna Gumtow, Allie DeRocher and Jess Leeck with six, eight and five kills respectively. Allison Precord contributed 14 assists and Alexis Pilarski had 12 digs lo lead an overall solid team defense.

“The ladies came together as a team after a tough BNC defeat the other night and got back to playing their game. We ran the kind of offense we know we are capable of and played great defense,” Alpena coach Kolby Andrews said. “We know what it is going to take to win the the Big North Conference and we brought that tonight.”

The Wildcats travel to Bay City this weekend for the Bay City Central Invitational tournament.

Alcona 8, W-P 0

WHITTEMORE–The Alcona soccer team braved the elements and opened North Star League play on a winning note on Wednesday, defeating Whittemore-Prescott 8-0.

Joel Steiner and Elliot Dubuque each scored twice and Brett Nelson, Matt Warner, Travis Buurma and Justin Smigelski added single tallies for the Tigers (5-1). For Smigelski, a senior, the goal was the first of his varsity career.

Alcona keeper Aidan Wrobel made two saves.

Alcona hosts Oscoda on Monday.
