Alpena tennis team struggles against talented Trojans

The Alpena High boys tennis team knew it was going to be a challenge against Big North Conference foe Traverse City Central on Tuesday.

The Wildcats ran up against a talented Trojans team and were shut out 6-0 at Alpena High School.

Nehemiah Rao lost 6-0 and 6-0 at No. 1 singles to Hayden McNamara. Ashwin Chhapamohan was also defeat 6-0 and 6-0 by Matt Henkel at No. singles and Matt Failor completed the perfect sweep at No. 3 singles against Dean Kowalewsky, winning 6-0 and 6-0.

Kevin Cook and Josh Hart fell at No. 1 doubles to Chase Berden and James Turner 6-0 and 6-0. Austin Schultz and Nick Sommerfield blanked Josh Pokorzynski and Brett Bonifas at No. 2 doubles 6-0 and 6-0. Alpena’s No. 3 doubles team of Harrison Butch and Dan Cox fell to Ryan O’Connor and Drew Humphrey 6-1 and 6-0.

Ogemaw-Heights 1

OGEMAW-HEIGHTS — The Alpena volleyball team defeated Ogemaw-Heights on Monday in four sets, defeating the Falcons by scores of 23-25, 25-23, 25-16 and 25-10.

Emma Dockrill and Alli DeRocher led the Wildcats with seven kills apiece. Adrianna Gumtow and Jade Gray each had six kills. Allison Precord dished out 22 assists.

Alpena’s net defense was strong as DeRocher had eight blocks and Gray added three. Alexis Pilarski chipped in with 13 digs and three aces.

The Wildcats are back in action today as they travel to Traverse City Central to take on the rival Trojans.

Mackinac Island 3,

Atlanta 1

ATLANTA — The Atlanta volleyball team played well in one aspect of the game, but couldn’t put it all together as they fell in four sets at home to Mackinac Island on Tuesday, losing by final scores of 25-16, 19-25, 18-25 and 20-25.

Jaida Chippa led the Huskies will four kills, three digs, three aces and a block. Ondreya Godrich added six kills, six blocks and two aces and Jayda Richter chipped in with four digs and three kills.

“The girls just couldn’t get their stuff together tonight,” Atlanta coach Dawn McSwain said. “We were good on offense, but bad defensively tonight.”

Rogers City 3,

Mio 1

MIO — The Rogers City volleyball team remained undefeated in North Star League play with a win in four sets over Mio Tuesday night, beating the Thunderbolts by scores of 25-23, 19-25, 25-14 and 25-20.

Taylor Fleming led the Hurons with 15 kills, 15 digs and four blocks. Kyrsten Altman handed out 18 assists, had 10 digs, four aces and four kills. Maddie Hincka had six kills and four aces. Shawna McDonald added four kills, Amanda Wirgau finished with 19 digs, Kristin Brege had 11 digs and Sarah Brege had 17 digs and dished out 16 assists.
