Local athletes qualify for track and field finals

LINCOLN–Despite consistent rain and cold temperatures, many local athletes braved the elements on Saturday to qualify for the Division 4 track and field state finals during a regional meet at Alcona High School.

Hillman’s Billy Kolcan and Alcona’s Lily Bilbey won two events each and more than a dozen local athletes qualified individually for the state finals, which will be held on June 2 at Hudsonville High School.

Athletes can qualify for the finals by finishing first or second in an event or by reaching a predetermined qualifying time or distance.

Kolcan won the boys high jump (6-1) and 300 hurdles (41.38) while Bilbey paced the girls field in the 100 dash (13.43) and 200 dash (27.54). They were two of five local athletes to qualify individually in more than one event.

Hillman’s Brandon Banks won the 800 run (2:05.95) and finished second in the 1,600 run (4:41.37). Hillman’s Lyndsey Ryba took second in the 200 dash (28.71) and the high jump (4-8) to qualify in both events. Rogers City’s Morgan Baller won the 3,200 run (13:37.02) and finished second in the 1,600 run (5:53.81).

Fairview’s Jaedyn Winton won the 800 run (2:32.99); Alcona’s Rose Schopfer won the pole vault (8-0); Rogers City’s Demi Jo Flewelling won the high jump (4-11) and Jaclyn Nash rounded out the local winners with a win the discus (95-10)

The Alcona girls track team missed a clean sweep in qualifying in the relays, but will send its 400, 800 and 1,600 relay teams to the finals.

The 400 relay team of Bilbey, Kameesha Fuqua, Rachel Layton and Caroline Forsythe took second (54.50); the 800 relay team of Bilbey, Fuqua, Forsythe and Karen Sharboneau won in 1:56.99 and the 800 relay team of Forsythe, Sharboneau, Sarah Sweet and Faith Wallenmaier took second (4:52.81).

Other local boys state qualifiers include: Hillman’s 1,600 relay team of Banks, Kolcan, Gunner Mellingen and Matthew Hunt (2nd, 3:39.99); Fairview’s Derek Nolan in the discus (2nd, 127-6); Rogers City’s Luke Augsberger in the high jump (2nd, 5-11) and Mellingen in the long jump (3rd, 19-8).

Other local girls state qualifiers include: Rogers City’s Catherine Belusar in the 400 dash (2nd, 1:08.54); Alcona’s Courtney Winter in the 100 hurdles (2nd, 19.08) and Alcona’s Ugna Jurgaityte in the discus (2nd, 91-11).

Whittemore-Prescott won the boys meet with 181 points and was followed by Au Gres (79), Johannesburg-Lewiston (76), Hillman (68), Inland Lakes (49), Hale (42), Gaylord St. Mary (40), Alcona (39), Rogers City (27), Onaway (19), Posen (13), Fairview (10), Mio (9) and Pellston (4).

Joburg won the girls meet with 136.5 points and was followed by Inland Lakes (128), Alcona (114.5), Rogers City (71.5), Hillman (39.5), Fairview (39), Onaway (31), Whittemore (30), St. Mary (18), Au Gres (16), Posen (10), Mio (3) and Hale (2).

400 Relay–4. Alcona (John Sharboneau, Nick Rasmussen, Tomasso Venditti and Elliot Dubuque), 49.24; 5. Rogers City (Augsberger, Jacob Shoemaker, Cory Sweeso and Billy Colorite), 49.24.

800 Relay–5. Alcona (Rasmussen, Venditti, Conner McCoy and Connor Kessler), 1:41.89.

3,200 Relay–4. Alcona (Dubuque, Nelson, Alex Harmon and Zach Stephenson), 9:22.41; 5. Posen (Eyan Hincka, Antonio Brunet, Tyler Hincka and Cameron Paull), 9:41.85.

Shot Put–5. Sharboneau, 39-2 3/4.

Discus–4. Sharboneau, 123-2; 5. Gabe Jakubcin, Posen, 108-10.
