Hillman wins inaugural tourney; Zdybel wins first game for Posen

WEST BRANCH–The Hillman baseball team came out on top in its inaugural Tiger Invitational on Saturday, defeating Brimley and Ogemaw Heights to take top honors.

Hillman won its first game 21-0 over Brimley. Jared Juergens earned the win over the Tigers, allowing no runs on two hits with eight strikeouts and a walk.

At the plate, Gage Steinke was 1-for-3 with four runs scored, three walks and an RBI; Juergens was 1-for-3 with four runs scored, two walks and an RBI; Kyler Moir was 1-for-3 with a grand slam, two runs scored and five RBI; Izac Thompson was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI; Wyatt Barrie walked twice and had two RBI; Kory Henigan was 0-1 for a sac fly and an RBI; Nash Steinke scored a run and had two RBI; Andrew Funk was 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI; Cam Koenig was 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI; Fisher Linseman was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI and Nic Taratuta was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

In the second game, Hillman edged Ogemaw Heights 9-8. Henigan earned the win after pitching an inning of relief, allowing three runs (two earned) and three hits while striking out one.

Moir started and allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits with seven strikeouts and three walks in four innings.

Juergens was 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI; Moir was 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI; Henigan was 1-for-3 with an RBI; Funk was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored; Koenig was 3-for-3 with two runs scored; Taratuta was 1-for-1 with two runs scored, two RBI and a walk and Nash Steinke was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Zdybel earns first win as Posen splits

MIO–Jory Zdybel earned his first varsity win and the Posen baseball team split a pair of games during a tournament in Mio on Saturday.

Zdybel’s first win as a pitcher came in a 4-3 triumph over Rogers City where Zdybel pitched six innings, allowed three runs, walked four and struck out three.

Posen’s hitters backed up Zdybel’s efforts with five hits. Lucas Stone was 2-for-3, Jared Kamyszek was 1-for-2 and Wyatt Romel was 0-for-2, but put the ball in play and had two RBI.

“As a team we played well, fielding the ball behind him (Zdybel),” Posen coach Pat Kowalski said. “It was a great win for our program.”

Posen was limited to three hits in a 10-0 loss to Rudyard in its tournament opener. Kamyszek, Avery Werth and Mark Wisniewski each had a hit for the Vikings and Wisniewski pitched for Posen.

Posen is 2-2 on the season and hosts Gaylord St. Mary on Tuesday.

SOFTBALL

Hurons sweep Armada

ARMADA–The Rogers City softball team won its second double header in as many days, taking two games from Division 2 Armada on Saturday.

The Hurons (6-2) topped Armada 4-2 and 11-6 and had previously swept Reese on Friday.

In the first game Saturday, Jayna Hance was the winning pitcher. She allowed two runs on four hits with five strikeouts.

At the plate, Amanda Wirgau had a double and an RBI, Taylor Fleming had a hit and two RBIs and Linnea Hentkowski had a hit and an RBI.

Kayla Rabeau, Hannah Fleming, Jazmyn Saile and Kristin Brege each added a hit.

In the nightcap, Krysten Altman earned the win after allowing six runs on eight hits with 10 strikeouts.

Rogers City finished with 12 hits. Wirgau had a double and two RBI and Brege had two hits and three RBI; Rabeau had two hits and Altman had two hits and three RBI.

Hance, Hannah Fleming, Taylor Fleming, Hentkowski and Catheryn Hart each added a hit.

Rogers City plays at Petoskey on Wednesday.

Onaway splits with Sturgis

STURGIS–The Onaway softball team earned its first win of the season on Saturday, defeating Sturgis 12-2 in the first game of a doubleheader.

Calley Selke earned the win for the Cardinals (1-2-1), allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with two walks and 15 strikeouts in seven innings.

At the plate for Onaway, Lauren Welklin was 1-for-4 with two RBI; Kennedy Crawford was 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored; Selke was 1-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored; Kayla Metty was 3-for-5 and had a three-run home run and scored three runs; Brittany Buczkowski was 2-for-4 with two RBI; Carmen Selke was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and Jordan Larson was 2-for-3 with three runs scored.

Sturgis rallied in the nightcap and defeated Onaway 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Crawford took the loss for Onaway, allowing six runs (three earned) on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

At the plate, Welklin was 1-for-3 with two RBI; Crawford was 1-for-4; Metty was 1-for-3 with a run scored; Calley Selke scored a run; Maddie McLean was 3-for-3 and Buczkowski was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

“I’m very proud of how the girls played against some tough competition,” Onaway coach Jodi Brewbaker said. “It was a very fun weekend.”

Onaway hosts Posen at 4 p.m. today.
