Alpena hosting Cal Ripken state tournaments this weekend

Alpena will be the place to be this weekend for youth baseball.

Over the next three days, Alpena will host the 2017 Cal Ripken Michigan State Tournament for the 8U, 9U, 10U and 12U divisions with nearly 50 games scheduled between the four divisions.

Game begin at 10 a.m today at the Hurons Shores Complex on US 23 North and continue through Sunday with the championship games starting at noon on Sunday.

Alpena will have seven teams competing this weekend. One Alpena team each will compete in the 8U and 10U division. An Alpena Green team and an Alpena White team will compete in the 9U division an Alpena team, an Alpena Green team and an Alpena White team will compete in the 12U division.

Other teams competing include Macomb Clinton, Rosedale, Howard Township, L’Anse Creuse and Brandywine.

Alpena is hosting for the second time since 2014. Alpena teams won titles in the 10U, 12U and 14U on their home field in 2014 and since the Alpena Huron Shores Little League-Alpena Babe Ruth merger in 2013, Alpena teams have won at least a dozen state titles.

Alpena’s 8U team will play Macomb Clinton at 10 a.m. today and Alpena’s Green and White 9U teams will play at 1 and 3 p.m. respectively against Macomb Clinton and Brandywine.

Alpena’s 10U team will open tournament play against Howard Township at 3 p.m. and will also play Macomb Clinton at 6 p.m.

Alpena’s three teams in the 12U division will also play today. Alpena will play Macomb Clinton at 10 a.m., Alpena White will play Rosedale at 1 p.m. and Alpena Green will play Howard Township at 3 p.m.
