Alpena 8U edges Macomb to open state tournament

News Photo by Jonny Zawacki Alpena's Owen Kaiser is safe after legging out a single during the first inning of a Cal Ripken Michigan State baseball tournament on Friday at the Huron Shores Complex in Alpena.

The 2017 Cal Ripken Michigan State baseball tournament started with a pair of 8U teams doing battle.

Alpena was able to edge Macomb Clinton in the first game of the day by a final score of 3-0.

After a scoreless first inning, Alpena scored two runs in the home half of the first inning thanks to timely hitting an aggressive baserunning.

Alpena’s Evan Hahn ripped a one out triple down the right field line that scored a run to give the home team a lead they wouldn’t give up.

A batter later, Carter Green hit into a fielders choice that scored Hahn to put Alpena up by two after two innings.

Alpena got its third and final run in the bottom of the fourth thanks to another triple, this time off the bat of Trevor Worth who advanced home on a wild throw to third base.

Alpena played sound defensively and shut out Macomb to start off tournament play in style.

Alpena will play Brandywine at 8 a.m. today in what will will be their first of two games today.
