Alcona baseball team captures district crown

LINCOLN — There isn’t a much sweeter feeling than winning your final home games of the year and celebrating with a district championship in front of your hometown.

On Saturday, that’s just what the Alcona baseball team did as they won two games to capture the district crown in front of their home crowd in Lincoln.

The Tigers edged Whittemore-Prescott 5-3 in a district semifinal game to get to the championship game later in the day.

Jake McFadden pitched the first five innings to pick up the win. McFadden allowed three runs on six hits, walked two and struck out six. Josh Kilbourn came in to pitch the final two innings and face just six batters, allowing one hit and fanned six.

Offensivley, Alcona was led by Brock Franklin who was a perfect 2-for-2 with a double and a triple. Devon Mills was 3-for-4 and Alex Stephenson went 2-for-4.

The Tigers advanced to the district final game when they play Au Gres after the Wolverines knocked off Mio in the second game of the day.

Alcona put together another solid effort and held on to beat Au Gres by a score of 6-5 to continue its season.

McFadden once again started the game and picked up the win as Erik Davey came on in relief.

At the plate, Davey went 4-for-4 and Matt Krisan was 3-for-4.

Alcona improves to 22-11 on the year and will travel to Rogers City on Saturday to take on Gaylord St. Mary in a regional semifinal game that will begin at 10 a.m.
