LINCOLN — Coming into the season with high expectations, the Rogers City softball team has still been searching for one break out game that could get it going.

The Hurons broke out on Monday, sweeping Alcona in a North Star League doubleheader, winning by scores of 20-6 and 24-4.

After needing just five innings to take of business in game one, the Hurons did not let up at all in the nightcap.

Despite going down in order to start the game in the first inning and falling behind 2-0 as Brittany Decker and Keilee Elmer both drove in runs to give Alcona a lead, the Hurons collected themselves and went on to pound the ball the rest of the game.

Rogers City blew the game wide open as it scored eight runs in the top of the second inning and five more in the third.

The Hurons batted around in the second and seven of their nine starters crossed home plate in the inning. After Hannah Fleming and Taylor Fleming both reached on errors to start the inning, Amanda Wirgau singled home Hannah Fleming and a batter later, Saige Wagner ripped one-out double to score both Taylor Fleming and Wirgau to start the rally.

Wagner started off the third with a single and Alissa Bowden followed that with a double to put runners at second and third to being the inning. One batter later, Jayna Hance blasted a three-run home run to center field.

Kyrsten Altman reached on an error and two batters later, Hannah Fleming hit the top of a car on a two-run home run as the Hurons celebrated in style at home plate after both home runs.

Rogers City went on to score two more runs in the fourth and nine in the fifth to coast to another lopsided victory and remain unbeaten on the season.

Hance led the way as she not only picked up the win in game two, but also went 4-for-5 at the plate with a single, two doubles and a home run to go along with four runs scored and five RBI.

Hannah Fleming was 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, four runs scored and four RBI. Mary Brege went 2-for-3 with three RBI, Wagner was 2-for-2 with two RBI, Jordyn Schalk went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and Taylor Fleming went 3-for-5 with three runs scored.

The Hurons improve to 12-0 overall and 4-0 in NSL play.

Rogers City will have its biggest test of the season on Thursday when it faces off against Hillman in what could be a game between two undefeated teams and two of the top five softball teams in Class D.
