Alpena girls soccer tops Falcons; Onaway pitchers stellar in season opener

WEST BRANCH– The Alpena soccer team picked up another shut out victory, this time defeating Ogemaw Heights on Thursday by a score of 2-0.

The Wildcats got a goal in each half as the first came off the leg of Mollie Girard with an assist from Anna Young.

The second half goal came from another Girard as this time it was Madyson Girard who found the back of the net on an assist from Chloe Lacombe.

Maren Winter eanred her second shutout in as many games as Alpena improves to 2-0 on the year.

The Wildcats will return to the field on Wednesday when they travel to Grayling.

The Alpena JV team was also victorious on Thursday as they defeated Ogemaw by a score of 4-0.

SOFTBALL

ONAWAY — The Onaway softball team got off to nice start to start to their new season as they earned a doubleheader sweep of Forest Area, winning by scores of 10-0 in each game.

Callie Selke led the Cardinals in game one as she tossed a no-hitter as she fanned 15 batters.

At the plate, Alison LaFave was 2-for-2 with and RBI. Kennedy Crawford was 1-for-2, Brittany Buczkowski was 1-for-3 with an RBI double, Lauren Welklin hit a two-run triple, Taylor Ehrke had an RBI double and Maddie McLean also added a double.

In the nightcap, Onaway got another strong performance on the mound, this time from Elissa Nash who picthed a one-hit shutout with six strikeouts.

Offensively, Jordan Larson went 2-for-2 with a two-run triple. Daria Domke was 2-for-3, Crawford went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, Selke collected two hits including a double, Welklin added a hit and both McLean and Kayla Metty added an RBI apiece.

Onaway starts the season 2-0 and will be back in action on Monday when they travel to Bellaire.

POSEN — The Posen softball team kept up its strong start to the season as they swept Harbor Light by scores of 15-0 and 21-11.

The Vikings were hot with the sticks all night and it started in game one as Riley Krajniak was 2-for-3, Hannah Stone went 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBI. Brooke Ciarkowski went a perfect 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI. Arianne Chojnacki picked up the win as she pitched three innings, allowing four hits, no runs and striking out two.

Posen broke out in the second inning with 10 runs as they coasted to a big victory.

The Vikings continued to hit in the nightcap as Krajniak hit a grand slam, Ciarkowski went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI, Taylor Roznowski was 2-for-3 with a double, Cami LaTulip collected three hits including a double and Liz Kowalski went a perfect 3-for-3.

Chojnacki again picked up the victory as she came in and pitched the final 2 2/3 innings allowing two hits, no runs and struck out two.

Posen improves to 4-0 and will be back in action on Monday when it hosts Oscoda.

WOLVERINE — The Atlanta softball team was on the receiving end of a doubleheader sweep against Wolverine on Thursday, losing by scores of 9-8 and 12-10.

Jade Forrester struck out six batters for the Huskies and Tiffany Juergens had seven hits throughout the doublheader including a double.

Forrester, Juergens and Cherokee Cunningham all doubled on the night in the losing efforts.

BASEBALL

Alpena JV 11, Rogers City 3

Alpena JV 16, Rogers City 6

The Alpena JV baseball team picked up two wins on Thursday, sweeping Rogers City by scores of 11-3 and 16-6.

Alpena was led in game one by Keegan Spomer, Hunter Canute and Drew Booth who combined on the mount to allow five hits and strike out seven.

At the plate, Kyle VanDusen was 2-for-3 and Owen Limback was 2-for-3. Five others had one hit apiece for the Wildcats.

In the nightcap, Riley Arlt and Jordan Schultz combine on the mound to allow three hits and strike out eight.

Offensively, Limback was a perfect 3-for-3, Schultz had a double and six other Wildcats added a hit apiece in the win.

Alpena improves to 3-1 and will host Sault Ste. Marie on Thursday.

Onaway 16, Forest Area 1

ONAWAY — The Onaway baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep of Forest Area on Thursday, winning by scores of 16-1 and 12-8.

In game one, Trevor Wregglesworth tossed a no-hitter across four innings, allowing one unearned run, walking three and striking out seven.

At the plate, D.J. Fenstermaker led the Cardinals going 2-for-3 with three runs scored, a double, three RBI and two stolen bases. Lucas Tollini went 2-for-2 with three runs and three RBI and Jeremiah Crawford was 2-for-4 with a a double, triple, stolen base and run scored.

Onaway hung on to win the nightcap as Cody Neeks picked up the win, pitching three innings, allowing three unearned runs while scattering three hits, walking two and striking out three.

Wregglesworth came on to pick up the save.

Offensively, Tollini went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, three RBI, a double and two stolen bases. Josiah Crawford was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two RBI, a double and a pair of stolen bases.

Onaway improves to 2-1-1 on the year and will be back in action on Monday at Bellaire.

Atlanta 14, Wolverine 4

WOLVERINE — The Atlanta baseball team swept Wolverine on Thursday winning big by scores of 14-4 and 19-3.

Austin Corbing picked up the win in game one and Ryan Weave collected three RBI at the plate.

Reece Wood pitched the nightcap to pick up the win.

Atlanta will be back in action on Monday when they travel to Au Gres.

Harbor Springs 12, Posen 0

Harbor Springs 8, Posen 4

POSEN — The Posen baseball team dropped two games on Wednesday, falling to Harbor Springs by scored of 12-0 and 8-4.

Jared Sharpe took the loss in game one. The two teams were tied at four after five innings in the nightcap, but Posen allowed four undearned runs in the top of the six which proved to be the difference.

At the plate in game two, Darren Dubie was 2-for-4, George Crowell was 1-for-2 with a double and Sharpe added a double.

The Vikings were held to just two hits in game one.

Posen 7, Harbor Light 6

POSEN — The Vikings were able to rebound after two losses on Wednesday with a doubleheader sweep of Harbor Light on Thursday, winning by scored of 7-6 and 11-5.

Crowell earned the win in game one pitching five innings. Avery Werth pitched the final inning to record the save.

At the plate, Dubie went 2-for-3, Andrew Hall had a double and Chase Shellie was a perfect 2-for-2.

In the nightcap, Werth went the distance to pick up the win.

Offensivley, Dubie went a perfect 3-for-3 with two doubles and Crowell was 2-for-2 with a double of his own.

Posen improves to 4-2 on the year and will open North Star League play on Monday when they host Oscoda.

Hillman JV 6, Whittemore-Prescott 4

Hillman JV 12, Whittemore-Prescott 4

WHITTEMORE-PRESCOTT — The Hillman JV baseball team picked up a doubleheader sweep of Whittemore-Prescott on Thursday, winning by scores of 6-4 and 12-4.

Isaac Morrison picked up the win in game one, tossing six innings, allowing four runs on five hits with eight strikeouts and walking four.

Morrison also helped out his own cause offensively going 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBI. Fisher Linseman went 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI and Jacob Morrison was 2-for-3.

Nash Steinke pitched the nightcap and picked up the win, going four innings, allowing four runs and five hits. while walking three and striking out four.

Steinke also helped himself out by going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and three runs scored. Gage Steinke was also 3-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored and Gunner Mellingen went 2-for-3.

GIRLS TENNIS

Alpena defeats Boyne City

BOYNE CITY — The Alpena girls tennis team continue its solid play to start the year as they defeat Boyne City 6-2.

Kayla Bullock won 2-6, 7-6 and 10-2 in the tie break at No. 1 singles. Kaitlyn Schultz won 6-0 and 6-1 and No. 2 singles, Yuka Yamano won 6-3 and -2 at No. 3 singles and Brynna Smith won 6-0 and 6-1 at No. 4 singles.

Katherine Sharp and Emily Kozlowski won 6-2 and 6-0 at No. 1 doubles. Breanna Kieliszewski and Taylor Belanger won 6-3 and 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

In the match with Harbor Springs, the team of Katie Foust and Agnes Du Mesnildot won 6-1 and 6-2 at No. 4 doubles. Smith won her second match at No. 4 singles 6-4 and 7-6.

“It was a great day of tennis for all. I am very proud of the team for the way they battled today, win or lose,” Alpena coach Charlie Giordano said.
